Google’s AI Overviews Are Here: How Mangaluru Businesses Can Still Get Found in 2026
Google now answers many searches with an AI summary before showing any links. Here is what that means for shops, clinics, restaurants and service businesses in Mangaluru and Udupi — and what to do about it.
Search “best bakery near Hampankatta” or “interior designer in Udupi” today and there is a good chance Google shows you an AI Overview — a written summary at the top of the page — before any normal results. For a local business, that changes the game. Customers may decide whom to call without ever scrolling to your website.
The good news: these summaries are built from information Google already trusts. If your business is easy for Google to understand, you have a real chance of being the name it mentions. Here is how we approach it for clients across Mangaluru and coastal Karnataka.
What actually changed
Classic local search showed a map with three businesses and a list of websites. AI Overviews add a layer on top: Google reads your website, your Google Business Profile, reviews and mentions on other sites, then writes an answer and links to the sources it relied on. Being one of those cited sources is the new “top spot”.
Seven things to do this month
1. Complete your Google Business Profile — properly
Category, service area (Mangaluru, Surathkal, Ullal, Udupi — wherever you actually work), opening hours, phone number, WhatsApp link, and at least 10 real photos. Keep festival-season hours updated; outdated hours are one of the most common reasons customers lose trust.
2. Answer real questions on your website
AI summaries love clear, direct answers. Add an FAQ to each service page: “Do you deliver to Puttur?”, “How long does a website take?”, “Do you offer Kannada signage?” Write the way your customers ask — in plain language.
3. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere
Your website, Google profile, Justdial, Instagram bio and Facebook page should list exactly the same business name, phone number and locality. Mismatches (“Mangalore” here, “Mangaluru” there is fine; two different phone numbers is not) make Google less confident about you.
4. Mention the places you serve
If you work in Udupi, Manipal, Kundapura, Kasaragod or Sullia, say so on your site in natural sentences — not as a keyword list. A short “Areas we serve” section on each service page goes a long way.
5. Get reviews that describe the work
“Great service!” helps a little. “They redesigned our restaurant menu and Instagram before Dasara and orders went up” helps much more, because it tells Google what you do and where. Ask happy customers to mention the service and their town.
6. Use structured data
Behind the scenes, your website can tell Google in a machine-readable way that you are a local business, where you are and which services you offer (this is called schema markup). Most small-business sites skip it; it is one of the easiest technical wins.
7. Publish useful local content
Short, genuinely useful articles — like a festive marketing checklist or a guide to bilingual signboards — show that a real local expert is behind the business. That is exactly the kind of source AI summaries like to quote.
Do websites still matter?
More than ever. AI Overviews cite websites, and when a customer is ready to spend money they still click through to check your work, prices and contact details. A fast, clear, mobile-friendly site is what turns that click into a call.
The businesses that win in AI search are not the ones gaming it — they are the ones that are easiest to understand.
Where to start
If you only do one thing this week, open your Google Business Profile on your phone and fix anything missing or outdated. Then look at your website through a customer’s eyes: can they find what you do, where you are and how to contact you within ten seconds?
